‘Papicha’ and Other New Films on Laemmle Virtual Cinema

May 29, 2020 by Gabriel Laemmle

[JUMP TO FILMS]

Dear Laemmle Fans,

Cinemas around the country are beginning to re-open, and although we’re still at least a few weeks away from that here in Los Angeles, it’s been fascinating to see the ingenious solutions being put forth to address the various public safety concerns.

In the meantime, we’re offering virtual access to Algerian drama Papicha, alongside re-releases of forgotten masterpieces The Grey Fox and Mysteries of Lisbon. There’s also several new bio-docs available, including profiles of Nelson Mandela, Fernando Botero, and George Plimpton.

I’d also like to thank everyone who participated in our recent audience feedback survey, which will remain open throughout next week. We hear your suggestions, and are actively looking for ways to improve the virtual experience until we can reopen (and maybe even after).

All the best,

Greg Laemmle

Laemmle Virtual Cinema is a great idea–we need more Laemmle-quality streamable films for the year more till there’s a COVID-19 vaccine–but it’s too Apple Mac-centric. If Laemmle Virtual Cinema were a Roku “channel” it would be accessible to the millions who have that platform. You already have the server and payment mechanism set up, so it would cost you almost nothing. Roku has many low/no-budget channels; a channel is just a link that Roku hosts (free, I think) and makes available for Roku owners to access. Ask your millenial–mine is busy trying to find out why my $50 Apple Lightning-to-HDMI adapter–my previous streaming solution using a recent iPad–failed after 8 hours of use. The Apple store that sold me that piece of s*** is of course closed.
