Can you believe it’s the 11th year of our Christmas Eve FIDDLER SING-ALONG!?  Join us in coming together as a community to celebrate the song, shtick, and shenanigans of Laemmle’s legendary Christmas Eve experience.

For 2018, this ever-popular event will be occurring at eight of our neighborhood venues including our brand new theater in Glendale and the magnificent single screen, art deco AHRYA FINE ARTS in Beverly Hills (see below for full listing and ticket links).

(Jump down to watch the Sing-A-Long trailer.  For tickets, visit Laemmle.com/Fiddler).

In addition to movie and song, the evening will feature TRIVIA with PRIZES being awarded to Fiddler buffs with the quickest recall.  Dressing in COSTUME is not required, but highly encouraged! Who knows, perhaps the best costume will garner a prize?  Or perhaps this is the year you’ll be given an opportunity to do your best Tevye or Golde impression?  That will be up to the emcee.  Indeed, each location will feature its own host (to be announced).

As Greg Laemmle is fond of saying “Christmas Eve isn’t just Chinese food!”  He elaborates, “This is your once-a-year chance to be the star of the shtetl. Join with friends and neighbors and sing your heart out alongside Fiddler’s screen legends. And it’s okay if you haven’t memorized all the songs. We provide the lyrics.”

Song highlights include the iconic “TRADITION”, “IF I WERE A RICH MAN”,  “TO LIFE”, “SUNRISE SUNSET”, “DO YOU LOVE ME?” and “ANATEVKA”, among many, many more.

Don’t be late! Those who wish to attend the program are advised to purchase tickets in advance as the program has traditionally sold to capacity. We welcome all those in the community who are looking for an alternative Christmas Eve.

See you in the shtetl…

Join Laemmle for Tour de Summer Camps on Oct. 28 and Earn Free Movies + Private Screening

September 22, 2018 by Marc H

This fall Laemmle is going to camp!  No, we’re not scheduling a “campy film” retrospective for our Throwback Thursday series  (though that might be a good idea!).  We’re going to an actual camp (Camp Alonim in Simi Valley to be precise) Oct. 28 to participate in the 5th annual Tour de Summer Camps, a charity bicycle ride that generates scholarship funding for 13 L.A. area Jewish summer camps.  The idea is to provide any youngster who wants to attend summer camp the means to do so. What’s not to love about that?

Here’s the best part: you can join us! That includes our very own Greg Laemmle, his wife Tish, and Laemmle V.P. and family member Jay Reisbaum – all proud products of local Jewish camps who made sure their kids got to experience the magic of camp for themselves!  Now, they’re riding on Oct. 28th to ensure that the next generation is afforded the same opportunity, regardless of financial status.

If riding isn’t your thing but you’d like to support Team Laemmle and the kids who’ll benefit,  CLICK HERE.  Thank you!

For more active participation, Team Laemmle is now forming and we’re accepting all comers at all levels to ride with Greg & co. The hardcore among us can opt for the century or metric century, while the less ambitious can opt for 36 or 18-mile routes. Mash the pedals or head out for a Sunday cruise. Either way, you’ll find like-minded spirits coming together for a day of fun, challenge, camaraderie, and natural beauty. All in the name of a great cause.

It gets better still. When you join Team Laemmle you’ll be eligible for perks that will appeal to both your cycling and movie-loving sides. For starters, if you’re a first-time TDSC (Tour de Summer Camps) participant, we’ll cover your entire registration fee (a $45-$55 value). If you’re a returning TDSC rider, we’ll provide you with code for $10 off.  Contact Marc Horwitz for Team Laemmle sign-up instructions and promo codes.

If you’re one of the first 18 members to join us, we’ll seed your fundraising account with $100.  This will give you a jump start on the $500 suggested minimum. Then it’s up to you to hit up your network. We’ll be there throughout to support you with ideas and incentives. Plus, there’ll be free team training rides in the lead up to the event.

Now … what about those fundraising incentives?

At $180, get a pair of Laemmle movie passes and free popcorn coupon, good at any of our nine neighborhood locations. That’s right, all you need to do is raise 80 bucks (when we supply the first $100) to earn your passes!

At $300, get a second pair of movie passes.

At $500, get a third pair of passes and a custom-designed Laemmle cycling jersey (post-event).

At $700, get a Laemmle Premiere Card with $100 to spend on movies and concessions (this replaces prior movie passes earned).

At $1000, keep your Premiere Card AND book a night in The Lamb’s Den, Laemmle’s swanky West L.A. 13-seat private screening room ($300 value).

Well, what do you say – let’s hop on our bikes, earn some great free stuff, and help us look after the next generation of movie-goers.  No-brainer, right?

Questions?  Don’t hesitate to get in touch.

RUN WITH THE BULLS and Painter Francisco Alvarado at NoHo 7, April 25

April 20, 2017 by Marc H

If you haven’t done so yet, next Tuesday, April 25 will be a good time to catch RUNNING WITH THE BULLS, Art in the Arthouse’s recent exhibit at the NoHo 7 featuring the works of FRANCISCO ALVARADO.  That’s because we’ll be having a “late-show celebration” Tuesday, April 25 from 7-9pm, featuring a slide show, artist talk, and of course, the usual food and beverage treats AAH is known for.

Drawing inspiration from nature and his travels, Alvarado creates powerful works utilizing a fascinating process that combines technology and hands-on manipulation of acrylic paint, mixed media and digital imaging.  Curated by Joshua Elias, the exhibit runs through early May at the NoHo 7.

Join us for the a late show celebration:
Laemmle NoHo 7
Tuesday, April 25, 7-9pm
RSVP HERE

About the Exhibit:

Painting with refined Matisse-like cutout shapes, Francisco Alvarado, has a propensity towards creating movement. Overlaying forms are charged with passionate, vibrant colors that evoke the volcanic fields in his native Ecuador. Inspired from loss, a ditch of emotion wells up in his art, focused, patiently rendered, evoking a wistful empathy.

Alvarado moved from Ecuador to Glendale, CA in 1969. Psychedelic 60s painter Peter Max influenced young Francisco greatly. With Heinz Edelman’s animation in the Beatles’ film the “Yellow Submarine,” animation as a gateway to fine art began to percolate.

Inspired by the emergence of Apple Computers, he enrolled at Long Beach State to study engineering. He threw himself into the brave new world of coding and digital imaging, ultimately leading to artistic experimentation with mixed media.

When mentor Quinton Bemiller introduced him to abstract painting, Alvarado’s work took new turns, filled with vivacity and freedom and influenced by luminaries such as Picasso, Hockney, and Matta. As a mature artist, Alvarado has connected to life and painting in a fuller sense, resulting in the stunning new works currently on display.

– Joshua Elias, Curator

The rare concurrence of Christmas Eve and the first night of Chanukah adds a new wrinkle to our tradition this year, enabling the community to come together in celebration of the Jewish holiday. “This year we can sing from the rooftops … and light the Chanukah Menorah!” comments Greg Laemmle.

To accommodate demand, the popular Fiddler program has been extended to six venues including the newly re-opened AHRYA FINE ARTS art deco movie palace in Beverly Hills.

In addition to exuberant movie and song, the evening will feature TRIVIA with PRIZES being awarded to Fiddler buffs with the quickest recall. Dressing in COSTUME is not required, but highly encouraged! Who knows, perhaps the best costume will garner a prize? That will be up to the emcee.

Art in the Arthouse Presents DAVID BUCKINGHAM: NOBODY LIKES A SMARTASS at the Monica Film Center

August 26, 2016 by Marc H

I Don’t Roll On Shabbos | cut and welded found metal

Laemmle’s Art in the Arthouse is delighted to present DAVID BUCKINGHAM: NOBODY LIKES A SMARTASS, a solo exhibit curated by KATE STERN of the renowned Frostig Collection.

Buckingham is a unique craftsman. Harnessing found metals to produce dynamic assemblages, he breaks the mold of contemporary art practices.

The exhibition takes place Aug. 30 to Nov. 30, 2016 and inhabits both floors of Laemmle’s stunning new venue, the Monica Film Center.

— Scroll down for more images —

About the Exhibit:

After a successful career as an advertising writer, David Buckingham launched his artistic journey in his 40s. His unconventional art education began with a “5-minute” welding lesson from artist Ray “Cowboy” Kelly of the Rivington School, a 1980s movement remembered by Buckingham as “a bunch of anarchist welders and poets and performance artists,” in New York’s East Village.

A neo-pop artist, Buckingham roams windblown alleys, abandoned factories, dodgy neighborhoods, gritty industrial areas, and the low deserts of Southern CA in search of the cast-off and forgotten – detritus such as tractor parts, old signage, car doors, gas cans, etc. It’s with this found collection of metal that he carves, bends, bolts, and welds his assemblages, breathing new life into the discarded forms. This is the beauty of welding. People can turn discarded metals into beautiful new creations that can be used for a range of different purposes. Due to the importance of recycling, a lot of people are trying to get into welding to try and create new pieces from their old metal products. Perhaps more people might want to get involved in welding by visiting a website like https://weldinginsider.com/ to see some reviews on different welding equipment that could be useful for those wanting to follow in David Buckingham’s footsteps. All colors are original as discovered; as he is fond of saying, “Buckingham is no painter!”

For his Art in the Arthouse show, NOBODY LIKES A SMARTASS, Buckingham aptly drew from his passion for cinema and dialogue. Quotes from iconic films like The Big Lebowski – “I don’t roll on Shabbos” and Blazing Saddles – “Where the white women at?” along with classic sound effects like “THWIP!” from Spidermen, feel right at home on the walls of the movie theater. Like David, the work is left of center or slightly askew, always playful and often raunchy.

Buckingham has exhibited extensively in the U.S. and abroad, including the California’s Riverside Art Museum and the Lancaster Museum of Art and History. His sculptures have been installed as public artworks in West Hollywood and Newport Beach. His work has been featured in an international advertising campaign for Wrangler Jeans and is purchased and commissioned by private collectors around the world.

Join us this Thursday Night at the Playhouse for the Opening of the PASADENA ART SHOW 2016

June 1, 2016 by Marc H

ArtHouse_Logo_08mhART IN THE ARTHOUSE invites you to experience The Pasadena Art Show 2016 featuring stunning and diverse works from 23 talented, local artists.

RSVP BELOW to the opening reception this Thursday, June 2, 6-9pm at Laemmle’s Playhouse 7 Theatre in Pasadena. The celebration includes the exhibit, curator talk, and artist presentation/slide show on the big screen!

Curator’s Statement:
We are honored to feature a spirited array of local artists in this, our second annual Pasadena community show. The cord that binds these diverse talents is more lyrical than stylistic. In a time when reason, logic, and subtlety fall prey to spectacle this group leads with clarity of vision and purpose, through stories that are often poetic in the telling. Shifting fields of Pasadena mise-en-scenes, ranging from the containment of the Metro to the expansiveness of the cosmos, usher us through our everyday journeys and refocus us to the present moment. We are delighted by a magnificent bloom, intrigued by a photo offering serenity in the face of divergent paths, moved by the elegance of a classic face, and charmed by visits to ‘the pastoral.’ Laemmle’s Art in the Arthouse was created to build community through artistic dialogue. This skillful collective fulfills that objective with panache, talent, and grace.

About The Pasadena Art Show:
The Pasadena Art Show is produced by artist, author, and local impresario Lynn Chang. The multi-faceted Chang has enlisted Laemmle and specifically its “Art in the Arthouse” program to act as venue and host for the now annual exhibit.

Art in the Arthouse arose in early 2014 out of a desire by Laemmle president Greg Laemmle to engage the fine arts community and bring quality works to the movie-going public. Since then, Laemmle has created unique gallery spaces within its venues by reclaiming wall space vacated by printed movie posters, like the ones found on the Fine Art America posters website (since replaced by rotating digital displays). With visionary input from curator Joshua Elias, Art in the Arthouse has bridged the worlds of fine art and fine cinema through over 20 exhibits, featuring mostly local and emerging talent. Proceeds from the sale of art benefit the activities of the Laemmle Charitable Foundation.

RSVPs are now closed for this event. Catch you at the next one!
