January 15, 2015 by Lamb L.

The 2015 Oscar Nominees were announced early this morning with BIRDMAN and THE GRAND BUDAPEST HOTEL leading the pack, each earning nine nominations. Also of note is Marion Cotallard’s nom for Best Actress for her French-language performance in TWO DAYS ONE NIGHT (now playing in West LA, starting Friday in Encino and Pasadena).

As for Best Foreign Film nominees: LEVIATHAN is now playing; TIMBUKTU opens 1/30; WILD TALES will likely open in March or April, IDA is available on DVD; and we don’t have a date yet for TANGERINES.

Perhaps the most exciting part of the whole affair is what these nominations mean for you: A chance to win free movie passes in our Umpteenth Annual Oscar Contest!

Laemmle Theatres will bestow fabulous prizes (movie passes) upon the people who most accurately predict the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Science’s choices in all 24 categories, from the shorts to Best Motion Picture. We’ve got some smart cookies for customers so we have a tie-breaker question: you also have to guess the show’s running time. Take the tie-breaker seriously! FABULOUS PRIZES (movie passes) to the those who can best predict the winners. First place wins ten pairs of passes, second place wins eight pairs and third place wins six pairs. Good luck!

Taylor Negron (August 1, 1957 – January 10, 2015)

January 12, 2015 by Lamb L.

As you may have heard, actor, artist, comedian Taylor Negron passed away last week.  Taylor was very dear to all of us at Lammle.  Recently, we had the great opportunity to work closely with him as we exhibited his series of “Snow Paintings” at the Royal as part of our Art in the Arthouse program.  Below are some remembrances of Taylor from the program’s curator, Joshua Elias.

Taylor Negron was a special artist in all senses. He was really funny, interesting, irreverent, philosophical, deeply spiritual, and a man of refined taste.

I met Taylor through Sharon Barr in 1983. Our house burned down and Taylor opened his house up to us as he traveled back and forth to France.

He would introduce us to his friends as “my burn victimmmms.”

In the hills off of Beechwood Canyon near the Reservoir and like all of Taylor’s residences it was filled with light and Spanish windows that seemed to let the wind blow through the entire house.

There was a giant beehive outside the window and that made for drama.

Musician and Taylor’s lifelong friend Syd Straw came to stay and the house was full of musicians, comedians, actors and magic.

Taylor would draw often in the late afternoons. He was so generous.

Once a house full of comedians came back for a dinner party and a party party and everyone got up in the middle of the meal and stood on chairs.

In more recent times we reconnected through his paintings. I curated his work in Laemmle’s Art in the Arthouse at the Royal Theatre.

He painted many people seated as they are, spiritual portraits. He painted houses and intimate rooms. He was a very talented painter as well as a writer and a comedian.

The exhibit was a big success and Taylor and Logan Heftel performed in the theatre next to his artwork. The art opening, like Taylor, was a gem. We at Laemmle and me personally had the joy to know Taylor. He left a great impression on us all.

Editor’s Note: Actor, artist, comedian, and playwright Taylor Negron lost his battle with cancer on January 10, 2015. You can see examples of his work and hear him discuss his process in the short video, “Why I Paint”.

The Laemmle Charitable Foundation’s Year in Giving

December 24, 2014 by Greg Laemmle

I’m pleased to report that the Laemmle Charitable Foundation contributed $133,000 to local non-profit organizations in 2014. This represents a 10% increase over 2013 giving.

Our largest gift was made to the Los Angeles County Bicycle Coalition. With $10,000, the Foundation became the first sponsor of the organization’s Operation Firefly program. This program runs from November through February, setting up bike light distribution points throughout LA County. Free light sets are distributed to riders who are caught out at night without this vital safety equipment. Since many people are riding out of economic necessity, they are unable to afford lights, or can not afford to replace stolen lights. This program helps make our streets safer for the most vulnerable road users.

We continue to support a number of local environmental groups that are helping to make Los Angeles more sustainable. Included here are organizations such as Friends of the Los Angeles River, Heal the Bay, Tree People and The Trust for Public Land – Parks for People LA.

Food security is an issue in Los Angeles. So we support traditional food banks like SOVA. But we also support innovation organizations like Food Forward that provide fresh fruit and product to food pantries by gleaning fruit from wholesalers, farmer’s markets, and even by picking fruit from backyard trees.

Homelessness is also one of those intractable problems for our community. So we make it a point to support a number of organizations working on short-term and long-term solutions for this problem. These include OPCC, Chrysalis, Union Station Homeless Services and LA Family Housing, among others.

While we tend to develop long-standing relationships with the organizations we support. Some organizations have been supported by the Foundation since our inception in 2000. But we also like to find new groups to support. This year, these include Valley Community Healthcare, Ascencia, and The Maple Counseling Center.

Los Angeles is a great place to live. But it can be better, healthier, more sustainable, and more just. We feel that these organizations are working hard everyday to address the problems that face our community. We are proud to be able to support them with our grants and we invite you to join us and make a year-end, tax deductible contribution.

30th Annual Spirit Award Nominees Announced; Indiewire on How Film Independent Went “Off the Rails” (in a Good Way) with their Choices; John Waters Mouths “Happy Birthday”

November 26, 2014 by Lamb L.

The Spirit Awards turn 30 next February 21, and lots of the film we’ve shown, are showing or will show are up for shiny hardware. BIRDMAN and BOYHOOD are the worthy nominees with the most nods, but other terrific, startlingly original films you can see at Laemmle Theatres include CITIZENFOUR, MOMMY, WHIPLASH, SELMA, A GIRL WALKS HOME ALONE AT NIGHT and more. John Waters, a frequent host of the proceedings, calls it his “kind of crowd…sexually confused…and financially challenged.” Here are his birthday wishes for Spirit Awards:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g6FtXE3uoSU

Eric Kohn and Anne Thompson of Indiewire are pleased with Film Independent’s Choices, which they think are a return to the organization’s non-conformist roots. (Last year the Spirit Awards and Oscars were carbon copies of each other in most of the major categories.) Listen to their conversation.

Operation Firefly Goes Live!

November 20, 2014 by Lamb L.

With the help of the LAEMMLE FOUNDATION, our friends at the LACBC (Los Angeles County Bicycle Coalition) are it again!  They’re hitting the streets and making Southland roads safer by distributing free bicycle lights.  It’s all part of their annual OPERATION FIREFLY.

Here’s how it works: LACBC’s street team descends (unannounced) upon a surprise location that typically experiences a high volume of cyclists during the peak commute hours of 5-7pm.  With the recent turning back of the clock, these are dark hours, perfect for sussing out bicycles in need of lights. Operation Firefly volunteers stop any non-illuminated cyclist and offer to install high-quality front and rear LED lights completely free of charge! In addition to the lights, recipients receive an informational “spoke card” that explains the laws for riding at night and includes vital safety tips.

This year, thousands of lights will be given away through over 25 distribution events across the L.A region including multiple sites in the valley, city, and all the way down to Long Beach. The program continues until we turn the clock forward in March.

Distribution site are not announced in advance. But you can get the scoop the day of a giveaway by subscribing to the LACBC’s Twitter Feed.   And all those who include #OperationFirefly in their social media posts during the run of the program will be eligible to win prizes such as LACBC memberships, Operation Firefly Merchandise, and Laemmle prizes (including movie tickets).

As mentioned above, this year the Laemmle Foundation is proud to be the primary sponsor of Operation Firefly. With the support of the Foundation, LACBC is striving to double the number of lights distributed in 2014 from the previous year.

Greg Laemmle volunteers at this season's inaugural Operation Firefly distribution a the NoHo Metro station just blocks away from the NoHo 7.

LACBC Programs Director
COLIN BOGART remarks, “We are thrilled to have the Laemmle Foundation as our ‘guiding light’ for Operation Firefly this year.”
He continues, “And by making city streets safer for cyclists, pedestrians, and motorists, we’re pleased to be doing our part in fulfilling the foundation’s aim of ‘projecting a brighter future for L.A.'”

As part of our involvement, Laemmle volunteers will be on-hand at a number of the distributions to assist in the light give-aways and perhaps even give away samples of our world-famous popcorn!  Stay current with our Operation Firefly involvement and other happenings via Twitter at — twitter.com/laemmle.  And be sure to stay connected with the Laemmle Foundation and join the conversation via #laemmlegiving.

You can support Operation Firefly by “gifting” a set of lights, buying program merch (very cool cycling caps and vests!) or through simple donations.  Get all the details HERE.

Greg Laemmle on transforming neighborhoods into pedestrian-friendly business hubs

October 13, 2014 by Lamb L.

In last week’s issue of the Los Angeles Business Journal (membership required), Greg Laemmle urged leaders in Sacramento and Los Angeles to help create a greener, more connected Los Angeles through good policy, urban planning, and smart business practices.

Business owners often have a stereotype of being cold and dismissive of their employees and the local area’s needs. However, this is a stereotype of owners in the past and isn’t true for the newest, brightest owners and CEO’s who understand that in order to have a thriving business, every part of the business needs to be looked after.

For the employees, this includes providing employee benefits, have a high-quality HR system that deals with issues quickly, and look for new ways to keep employees engaged. Using Zenefits for HR software is a good idea for companies who want to maintain a good working environment for their employees. However, it’s not just the employees that need to be considered. Providing care and resources for the local area will help businesses be thought of fondly by the locals and ensure a good public image. This mutually benefits the area and business which is why Laemmle is calling for businesses to contribute to transforming neighborhoods into pedestrian-friendly business hubs. To contribute to this, businesses should really consider installing Burglar alarms in order to deter criminals from operating in the neighborhood which will, in turn, encourage more consumers and business owners to show an interest in the area. If businesses show that they care about their premises enough to take their security seriously, this will give customers confidence in their local businesses.

Greg cited the Playhouse 7 in Pasadena as an example of how an infrastructure that encourages walking, cycling, and public transit can benefit commerce and community.
“When we built the Playhouse 7 in Pasadena in 1999, we used shared-parking agreements. There was an understanding that as the area grew, the Playhouse District would add parking. Once the Gold Line started running in the area, many of the surface parking lots in the immediate vicinity of the theater were developed into mixed-use buildings with retail on the ground floor and residential units above. The area became denser, more vibrant – a real 24-hour neighborhood.

The Playhouse District never did add more parking but our business hasn’t suffered. Instead, people are finding alternative ways to get to the area – walking, biking or taking public transit. The economic boom that made the neighborhood more vibrant happened without adding parking – instead, we helped create a more authentic neighborhood commercial experience, and the city of Pasadena saved money for other vital needs.”
We hope to replicate the success of the Playhouse 7 in the coming months when we break ground on the Laemmle Lofts project in Glendale, a five-screen theater with 42 apartments and 6,000 square feet of commercial space.

Download and read the full article: Measuring-Commerce-by-Foot-LA-Business-Journal.PDF

A special note to our Valley fans: We continue to search for similar projects in West Valley neighborhoods and sincerely appreciate your support.
