The Return of Scary Subtitles: Frightening Foreign Films Every Throwback Thursday in October at the NoHo 7

At Laemmle we say, “Not Afraid of Subtitles.” But this October, subtitles get downright horrifying! Join us for the second installment of our month-long tribute to frightening foreign films at the NoHo 7… just in time for Halloween!

Our “Scary Subtitles” Throwback Thursday series begins on Thursday, October 4th with THE DEVIL’S BACKBONE! Doors open at 7pm, trivia starts at 7:30, and movies begin at 7:40pm. Check out the full schedule below!

October 4: The Devil’s Backbone [El Espinazo del Diablo]

After Carlos, a 12-year-old whose father has died in the Spanish Civil War, arrives at an ominous orphanage for boys, he learns that the school is haunted and has many dark secrets that will confront him. Directed and co-written by Guillermo del Toro (Pan’s Labrynth, The Shape of Water). Produced by Pedro Almodóvar. In Spanish with English subtitles. TICKETS.

October 11: Black Sabbath [I Tre Volti della Paura]

In this 1963 horror anthology, Boris Karloff hosts a trio of stories concerning a stalked call girl, an vampire who can only feed on those he loves, and a nurse who is haunted by her ring’s rightful owner. Actor/producer Mark Damon, who stars in the third segment, will participate in a Q&A at the screening. In addition to his acting career, Damon has produced many films including MONSTER and DAS BOOT. In Italian with English subtitles. TICKETS.

October 18: I Saw the Devil [Angmareul Boatda]

A shockingly violent and stunningly accomplished tale of murder and revenge from Korean genre master Jee-woon Kim (The Good, The Bad, The Weird and A Tale of Two Sisters). It transcends the police procedural and serial killer genres in surprising and thrilling new ways. In Korean with English subtitles.  TICKETS.

October 25: Dead Snow [Død Snø]

A group of friends had all they would need for a successful Easter vacation; cabin, skis, snowmobile, toboggan, and copious amounts of beer. Certainly, none of them had anticipated not returning home alive. However, the Nazi-zombie battalion haunting the mountains surrounding the aptly named Oksfjord (Axefjord) had other plans… In Norwegian with English subtitles. TICKETS.

LAEMMLE LIVE presents a special morning of music with the debut performance of the American Youth Symphony Woodwind Quintet. The American Youth Symphony inspires the future of classical music by sharing exceptional, innovative concerts based on their landmark Fellowship program for musicians in high school through doctoral music programs, for free or significantly reduced admission.  Competitively selected, the orchestra is comprised of 100 musicians who represent extraordinary talent from all over the world. By gifting the community with remarkable concerts at world-class venues, AYS remains committed to creating access and opportunity for everyone to experience the inspiration of this beautiful art form. In 2016, Maestro Carlos Izcaray, one of the leading conductors of his generation, became the third Music Director in the American Youth Symphony’s illustrious history. Also Music Director of the Alabama Symphony Orchestra, Maestro Izcaray has been praised by international press, winning top prizes prestigious festivals around the world and appearing with celebrated ensembles across five continents. A strong believer of supporting younger generations, Izcaray has worked extensively with the world’s top talents and leading music institutions, including his country’s own El Sistema. Join Laemmle for Tour de Summer Camps on Oct. 28 and Earn Free Movies + Private Screening

This fall Laemmle is going to camp!  No, we’re not scheduling a “campy film” retrospective for our Throwback Thursday series  (though that might be a good idea!).  We’re going to an actual camp (Camp Alonim in Simi Valley to be precise) Oct. 28 to participate in the 5th annual Tour de Summer Camps, a charity bicycle ride that generates scholarship funding for 13 L.A. area Jewish summer camps.  The idea is to provide any youngster who wants to attend summer camp the means to do so. What’s not to love about that?

Here’s the best part: you can join us! That includes our very own Greg Laemmle, his wife Tish, and Laemmle V.P. and family member Jay Reisbaum – all proud products of local Jewish camps who made sure their kids got to experience the magic of camp for themselves!  Now, they’re riding on Oct. 28th to ensure that the next generation is afforded the same opportunity, regardless of financial status.

For more active participation, Team Laemmle is now forming and we’re accepting all comers at all levels to ride with Greg & co. The hardcore among us can opt for the century or metric century, while the less ambitious can opt for 36 or 18-mile routes. Mash the pedals or head out for a Sunday cruise. Either way, you’ll find like-minded spirits coming together for a day of fun, challenge, camaraderie, and natural beauty. All in the name of a great cause.

It gets better still. When you join Team Laemmle you’ll be eligible for perks that will appeal to both your cycling and movie-loving sides. For starters, if you’re a first-time TDSC (Tour de Summer Camps) participant, we’ll cover your entire registration fee (a $45-$55 value).
