BILL W. Q&A’s this weekend at various theatres

May 17, 2012 by Lamb L.

In 1999, Bill Wilson was named one of TIME Magazine’s 100 Heroes and Icons of the 20th Century for his role as co-founder of Alcoholics Anonymous. Through interviews, recreations, and rare archival material, BILL W. traces Wilson’s life through his 17 years of devastating alcoholism, the crucial years of A.A.’s founding and growth, his battle with depression, his experimentation with LSD, and his struggle with celebrity status in an anonymous society. There are no doubts about it, Bill Wilson was a monumental figure with regards to raising awareness of alcoholism and the importance of seeking out treatment for addiciton and substance abuse issues. It is because of his work that getting help for alcohol addiction is much easier these days. Although overcoming alcoholism is not going to happen overnight, it is important for people battling any kind of addiction to know that help is always out there. For example, the Eugene drug and alcohol rehab center helps a significant number of people to confront substance abuse issues related to drug and alcohol dependence every single year. Correspondingly, you can find more information about the upcoming Q&A sessions below.

High praise for Patrick Wang’s IN THE FAMILY

May 2, 2012 by Lamb L.

Many small but great films rely on critics and audiences to create buzz instead of marketing budgets. If you want to support independent cinema make your way to the Monicas this weekend for an exclusive engagement of the self-distributed and highly praised IN THE FAMILY.

“…Mr. Wang’s slow-reveal psychological drama isn’t just a showcase for his excellent ensemble cast. Beautifully modulated and stylistically sui generis, “In the Family” is also one of the most accomplished and undersold directorial debuts this year.” – Paul Brunick, New York Times

“I was completely absorbed from beginning to end. What a courageous first feature this is, a film that sidesteps shopworn stereotypes and tells a quiet, firm, deeply humanist story about doing the right thing. It is a film that avoids any message or statement and simply shows us, with infinite sympathy, how the life of a completely original character can help us lead our own.” – Four stars, Roger Ebert, Chicago Sun-Times

IN THE FAMILY starts Friday, May 4 at the Monicas in Santa Monica. Actor/writer/director Patrick Wang and actor Trevor St. John will participate in a Q&A after the 8:30 screening on Friday, May 4. Trevor St. John and crew from the film will do the same after the 1 PM screening on Saturday, May 5.

Bob Laemmle recommends QUEEN TO PLAY

August 22, 2011 by Lamb L.

Occasionally — about once or twice a year — Laemmle Theatres owner Bob Laemmle likes to put a personal stamp of approval on one of the many movies we show. Here is his latest:

I would like to offer a recommendation for the French film QUEEN TO PLAY. When I first saw this film two years ago, both my wife and I found it to be a deeply enjoyable film. It has taken two years for the film to finally reach our screens due to the fact that the initial distributor went bankrupt. QUEEN TO PLAY stars Sandrine Bonnaire, who first became a star at age 18 in Agnès Varda’s 1985 film VAGABOND. Her co-star is Kevin Kline in a superb French-speaking performance. It is all that you could hope a French film would offer you. It is as well a heartwarming female-empowerment story. It will not have a large advertising budget so if you see and enjoy this film please pass along your recommendations to your friends.
