About the Exhibit

Isabella Kelly-Ramirez creates paintings and collages that introduce a host of fascinating females. Modern-day saints and superheroes, champions of the avant-garde, and fashionable figures to be reckoned with; these are icons of a new mythology from the imagination of the artist. Her arresting collages are playful acts of defiance. Kelly-Ramirez coopts images from fashion and art magazines, repurposing them to create surreal urban legends and ironic emblems of commercialism.

The works address the unattainable standards of beauty in fashion and life by reconstituting mainstream imagery into something quirkier and more humane. Kelly-Ramirez’s visual world continues in the striking paintings framed in soft sculpture. Bright, colorful portraits of humanoid figures appear in whimsical, unearthly settings. Somehow this creative, alternative place is more human, more generous, and more authentic than our curated “reality.”

Isabella Kelly-Ramirez lives and works in Los Angeles. Born in Santa Barbara, she has been involved in the art and theatre communities since she was a child. She received her B.A. from the University of California, Los Angeles in 2008 and works primarily in painting, collage, soft sculpture, and assemblage—with a pop surrealist flair.

About the exhibit
CALEY O’DWYER is a practicing artist, writer and therapist based in Los Angeles at the Brewery Arts Complex. His body of work serves as unmistakable proof that the professional triangle of Art, Writing, and Therapy inform each other. In this series, O’Dwyer explores multiple selves through deft application in a variety of media. Each figure moves through space playing with time and boundaries, visually appearing as a horizontal musical score. Gouache and collage cutouts, and literal scratching to create and understand surface, are key aesthetics. The dynamic intersection of pluralism and the singular self through syncopation and movement is the result of O’Dwyer’s intelligent, clear vision.

As a licensed therapist, O’Dwyer works with artists and creatives. The “artist as therapist as artist” is a very real dialogue that plays itself through line and the duplication of lithe figures, both urban in their action and oceanic fresh in lime colors and tones.After earning an MFA in creative writing from UC IRVINE, O’Dwyer was awarded the Academy of American Poets Fellowship prize, nominated for the Pushcart Prize, and has been a recipient of a Helene Wurlitzer grant for poetry. He currently teaches creative writing at Antioch University in Los Angeles. He enjoys being able to present new creative writing prompts to his students and have them submit such different variations of the same prompt. Teaching people how to explore prompts and improve their writing really motivates him to improve his own work. O’Dwyer’s second book, Light, Earth and Blue, features poems written in response to the abstract expressionist paintings of MARK ROTHKO. The poems were featured at the TATE MODERN in London as part of a 2008 Rothko retrospective. Enjoy this exploration of the artist moving through a post-modern space.

About the exhibit
Don’t call Raymond Logan a “realistic artist.” While his work depicts real-life subject matter, it is fundamentally grounded in abstraction and intuition. His true goal is to create a dialogue with you, the viewer, whereby mutual discovery and re-imagining of “the self” can take place. “Without the viewer, I am that proverbial tree in the forest,” he muses.

Raised locally, Logan developed as an artist in that wonderful vacuum known as childhood. As a young adult, he went on to graduate from Art Center College of Design in Pasadena and proceeded to serve multiple tours of duty in graphic design and advertising. This cumulative history heavily influences his painting today, especially in the realm of color. After a twenty-year hiatus from art, a chance encounter with a Cézanne self-portrait in Nashville inspired Logan to pick up a brush again. He selected oil paint as his medium because of its fluidity and malleability, often referring to his painting style as “carving” rather than painting.

Engaging Logan’s work is either an exercise in mysticism or quantum mechanics, depending on your bent. Go up close and experience the chaotic interplay of color and texture that plays out on the quantum level. Pull back and the artistic detail miraculously resolves into a recognizable pattern; the cosmos is familiar once more. Logan is still a resident Angeleno, living in our midst with his wife and two ebullient and boundlessly optimistic sons. We are thrilled to present him and his work as our first Art in the Arthouse showcase here at the brand new Laemmle Glendale.

About the exhibit
With awe and a reverence for nature, photographer KIRK MANN presents a unique artistic convergence. He envisions beauty, balance, birth, growth, decay, and dissolution as Gaia’s Blessing – where living organisms interact with their natural surroundings to form life-sustaining synergies. At age 19, Mann began to empathize with living beings in a whole new way. His insight enabled him to recognize the kinship of all life: mineral, plant, and animal. With camera in hand, he sought beauty in the early morning light. Determined to capture nature’s essence, his photography became his meditation on creation. Drawn to the spirituality and philosophy of the East, Mann has practiced acupuncture and Chinese medicine for over 20 years.

Additionally, he is a student of yoga, Asian Art, and has studied Chinese Art, and has studied Chinese calligraphy, brush painting, and Sumi-e with Tomi Ito Levin. Mann is also a singer and songwriter who has written and produced five albums, often integrating his photography and videography with his music. Based in Ventura, CA, the artist has exhibited in Ventura, Carpinteria, and Ojai. It’s not uncommon to feel an instant connection, as I did, with the photography of Kirk Mann. His intimate view of nature reminds us of our first explorations of the outdoors, when we appraised the world with fresh eyes and childhood wonder. Gaia’s Blessing invites us to take that journey once again.

Laemmle’s Art in the Arthouse presents THE PASADENA ART SHOW 2018! Please join us as we celebrate our local artists in an intimate theatre setting. Our special event features a slideshow on the big screen, artist talks, and of course refreshments. Meet the artists and stay for the wine, cheese and conversation Art in the Arthouse is known for. Sales benefit the Laemmle Foundation and its support of humanitarian and environmental causes in the Los Angeles region.

About the Exhibit

We continue our tradition of showcasing dynamic, local talent in this fourth edition of our annual Pasadena group exhibit. Produced every year by master impresario Lynn Chang, the process began with an online juried selection culled from over two hundred entries.

Judging criteria included aspects such as color, tone, line, composition, as well as skillful handling and sensitivity to media and materials. The body of work engages, delights, and provokes some intriguing questions: Do artists impose their picture on the world or does the world impose itself upon the artist? How do artists bridge the space between source and creative output? One cannot create and be in doubt at the same time. Just as no two objects occupy the same space, it takes conviction and commitment for the work to find its voice.

The challenge for our artists is how to extend the visual moment through guile and
wonder. Shifting fields of nature, tonal photos, torn paper landscapes, figures gazing in the stillness of a room, and dreamy abstracts reconnect us to the present.

ART IN THE ARTHOUSE presents: DANIELA SCHWEITZER: THE JOYFUL DANCE TO WATER in Santa Monica

ART IN THE ARTHOUSE invites you to view our newest exhibit in Santa Monica, DANIELA SCHWEITZER: THE JOYFUL DANCE TO WATER. All works are for sale and on display till August 29, 2018. About the exhibit
DANIELA SCHWEITZER is an artist, a painter, deeply connected to movement, light and the color of water. She captures moments and manifestations of aquatic colors, oceanic gatherings, and the compositional arc of a young dancer’s arms. With a nod to the Bay Area figurative movement and artists David Park and Richard Diebenkorn, Schweitzer’s work exudes a fluid harmonious quality, a balance of color and pictorial composition.

Additionally, her work exhibits a keen understanding of atmosphere, controlling mood and expressing locational flavor through juxtaposition of vibrant color. Schweitzer’s paintings begin with a photograph to create emotional impact and story. Schweitzer reflects, “I select my scenes … because they possess a simple, beautiful, and usually colorful human gesture that is energetic, calm, or harmonic. The balance and contrast between light and shadows, values and temperatures, and my loose and contrasting brushstrokes and lines all come together during the painting process to create my own style or point of view.”

Much of her oeuvre is personal. The painting Dancer, for instance, is a deftly rendered work of admiration, an observant balletic posturing of the artist’s daughter.

Born in Buenos Aires, Argentina, Daniela is a highly respected pediatrician, currently residing in Los Angeles. She studied at the Atelier Clásico de Dibujo y Pintura, Buenos Aires, Academia Central Mendía and earned her medical degree at the Buenos Aires School of Medicine, University of Buenos Aires.

Above all, Daniela Schweitzer’s work celebrates a genuine joie de vivre.

ART IN THE ARTHOUSE presents THE STROM PROJECT: FRAGMENT in Pasadena

ART IN THE ARTHOUSE invites you to view our newest exhibit in Pasadena from photographer, musician, and cultural anthropologist Yale Strom.  All works in THE STROM PROJECT: FRAGMENT exhibit are for sale and on display until June 14, 2018.

About the exhibit

Forty years ago, musician and cultural anthropologist YALE STROM trekked to Eastern Europe. He came across Jews living in cities, towns and tiny villages, often reminiscent of a pre-war shtetl environment. He bore witness to a dwindled Jewish population with some areas completely devoid of Jewish life. But he also found that a few larger cities were quite populous, and had actually exhibited an increase in numbers.

On his journey, Strom discovered a rich tapestry, including remnants of Hasidic and Orthodox worlds, Jews who were greatly devoted to communism, and parents who were fervently seeking better lives for their children and their children’s children.This photographic exhibition is a small window into a large field of conditions as they were, as they are, and perhaps as they will remain. Strom seeks out the moment with an artist’s hyperawareness, capturing it with an emotion and tone that is singular and authentic. The artist expresses a quality of relaxed spontaneity in his work, an organic, natural approach that never feels preset. The shots were taken with a 35mm Nikon FE camera using Kodak Tri-X 400 B&W film.

Strom’s career has been incredibly multi-disciplinary. In the klezmer world, he is celebrated as a leading scholar, ethnographer, virtuoso violinist and bandleader. Remarkably, he is a writer of 12 books, a musician/composer of 15 recordings and a documentarian of 9 films.

His newest film, American Socialist: The Life & Times of Eugene Victor Debs, starts Friday, May 4th in Pasadena and Santa Monica. The film traces the history of American populism with the man who inspired progressive ideas– from FDR’s New Deal to Bernie Sanders’s presidential campaign.

ART IN THE ARTHOUSE presents: NURIT AVESAR: EKPHRASIS in Santa Monica

ART IN THE ARTHOUSE invites you to view our newest exhibit in Santa Monica, NURIT AVESAR: EKPHRASIS. All works are for sale and on display till May 31, 2018.

About the exhibit
EKPHRASIS is a vivid, often dramatic, verbal description of a visual work of art, either real or imagined. The word refers to artwork, that, through its execution and use of materials, describes itself. Describing a painting, while simultaneously creating the work, is the essence of NURIT AVESAR’S process and the center of her painting experience. Each of her pieces have arrived through a deft appliqué of paper, canvas, netting, interwoven, sanded and emaciated. The materials are weathered; the weather is the materials.

Using intention and instinct, Avesar develops each composition as both palimpsest and collage. In these layering techniques, she appears influenced by the art of PAUL KLEE. The work is of larger scale and features wisps of smoke, shards of glass, and deckled light, creating forms abandoned and fragmented. Half-appearing edifices suggest structures and forms that we leave behind even as nature carries on long after our departure. Born and raised in Israel, Avesar moved to L.A. in her twenties where she worked as a graphic designer and illustrator. In 2010, she completed a MASTER OF ARTS in Studio Art at California State University Northridge. Recent exhibitions include the Carnegie Museum in Oxnard, a solo show at the Neutra Institute in Silverlake, and a curatorial debut at the Keystone Gallery in Los Angeles.
