ART IN THE ARTHOUSE presents: ISABELLA KELLY-RAMIREZ now in NoHo
Art in the Arthouse’s exhibit, ISABELLA KELLY-RAMIREZ: WHO IS SHE, has moved to NoHo! Explore the bold, dynamic works of Kelly-Ramirez on display until the end of June. All of the art is for sale and a portion of the proceeds benefits the Laemmle Foundation and its support of humanitarian and environmental causes in Los Angeles.
About the Exhibit
Isabella Kelly-Ramirez creates paintings and collages that introduce a host of fascinating females. Modern-day saints and superheroes, champions of the avant-garde, and fashionable figures to be reckoned with; these are icons of a new mythology from the imagination of the artist. Her arresting collages are playful acts of defiance. Kelly-Ramirez coopts images from fashion and art magazines, repurposing them to create surreal urban legends and ironic emblems of commercialism.
The works address the unattainable standards of beauty in fashion and life by reconstituting mainstream imagery into something quirkier and more humane. Kelly-Ramirez’s visual world continues in the striking paintings framed in soft sculpture. Bright, colorful portraits of humanoid figures appear in whimsical, unearthly settings. Somehow this creative, alternative place is more human, more generous, and more authentic than our curated “reality.”
Isabella Kelly-Ramirez lives and works in Los Angeles. Born in Santa Barbara, she has been involved in the art and theatre communities since she was a child. She received her B.A. from the University of California, Los Angeles in 2008 and works primarily in painting, collage, soft sculpture, and assemblage—with a pop surrealist flair.

LAEMMLE LIVE presents PASADENA CONSERVATORY OF MUSIC in Pasadena March 24
Laemmle Theatres proudly presents the launch of LAEMMLE LIVE PASADENA, inspired by Laemmle’s popular concert series in Santa Monica. Laemmle Live showcases emerging musicians and professional performers from local schools and organizations, celebrating our diverse community with live performance. Laemmle Live Pasadena’s free Sunday morning concerts will take place in the courtyard between Laemmle’s Playhouse 7 and Vroman’s Bookstore from 11am to 12pm. A light reception will follow the program. The inaugural concert will feature musicians from the Pasadena Conservatory of Music. The Pasadena Conservatory of Music provides opportunities for students of all ages and backgrounds to study, perform, and enjoy music. The March 24 program will feature the Los Angeles Youth Guitar Orchestra (LAYGO) from the Conservatory. LAYGO is a dynamic group composed of fifteen of PCM’s top guitar students, ages 12-17. The ensemble is led by faculty member Felix Bullock, coaches Brian Barany and Adam Pettit, who are proud to give the emerging musicians the opportunity to practice and perform around the world.
LAYGO has performed at SOKA University, the Pasadena Presbyterian Church, and Loyola Marymount University, and have collaborated with guitarists Scott Tennant, Andrew York, and pipa virtuoso, Wu Man. LAYGO has also embarked on several tours with the German group Guitarreando in a musical and cultural exchange. While on tour, they have performed in Switzerland, Prague, Germany, San Francisco, and Los Angeles. Additionally, they have premiered new works for guitar orchestra including Concerto in E minor by Alexander Mansour, Bleu by Alfonso Montes, and Tribal Youngers by Andrew York. The program will include Huapango by Moncayo, Kyrie from Requiem by W.A. Mozart, Heart & Passion by Patrick Roux, Tantra by Carlos Rafael Rivera.

March Melness: A Mel Brooks Favorite Every Throwback Thursday in North Hollywood
Some things just go together—like peanut butter and jelly, rum and coke, rama lama lama ka dinga da dinga dong. And, of course, who could forget the classic pairing of college basketball and Mel Brooks? Unlike March Madness, you won’t need to track 68 NCAA teams. The Producers, March 7: Failing producer Max Bialystock and his accountant, Leo Bloom, scam a group of elderly women out of their nest eggs by convincing them to invest in a horrendously offensive Third Reich-themed musical secretly intended to bomb the moment it opens. But when high-brow Broadway audiences mistakenly assume “Springtime for Hitler” is a satire, Bialystock finds himself with the critical acclaim that has long eluded him… and the biggest hit of his career. Blazing Saddles, March 14: Vulgar, crude, and occasionally scandalous in its racial humor, this hilarious bad-taste spoof of Western features Cleavon Little as the first black sheriff of a stunned town scheduled for demolition by an encroaching railroad. Format: DCP.
Young Frankenstein, March 21: In this spoof of Mary Shelley’s gothic novel, the grandson of Victor Frankenstein, a neurosurgeon, has spent his life living down the legend of his grandfather, even changing the pronunciation of his name. When he discovers his grandfather’s diary, he begins to feel differently, and returns to the family castle to satisfy his curiosity by replicating his ancestor’s experiments. In the process, he creates one very unique monster. Format: DCP.
Spaceballs, March 28: In a distant galaxy, planet Spaceball has depleted its air supply, leaving its citizens reliant on a product called “Perri-Air.” In desperation, Spaceball’s leader President Skroob orders the evil Dark Helmet to kidnap Princess Vespa of oxygen-rich Druidia and hold her hostage in exchange for air. But help arrives for the Princess in the form of renegade space pilot Lone Starr and his half-man, half-dog partner, Barf. Format: DCP.

ART IN THE ARTHOUSE presents: Ronald Dunlap: The Elegance of Silence in Claremont
Come on over to Claremont for Laemmle’s Art in the Arthouse’s newest show featuring the exquisite photography of Ronald Dunlap. The show will run at the Claremont 5 till June, 2019. Sales benefit the Laemmle Foundation and its support of humanitarian and environmental causes in Los Angeles.
About the Exhibit
Photographer and artist Ronald Dunlap has been “living pictures” both in life and through his lens for forty years. Dunlap’s service in Vietnam as a Marine left an indelible mark. Over the years he has returned to Vietnam, Cambodia and toured the East to record the stark images of daily life in those regions. Many of the fifteen photographs in this collection are from those journeys.Dunlap has a refined eye and fastidious focus. His imagery is evocative and speaks volumes. According to the artist his raison d’etre is “a concern with picture structure and the ability to connect with the viewer without the need for any written explanation.”
Dunlap has studied at Laguna College of Art and Design, Chouinard Art Institute and received his BFA in Fine Art from the California Institute of the Arts. His MFA Fine Art degree is from Otis College of Art and Design.The artist has previously shown his work at both Laemmle’s Pasadena and Claremont community art shows. Dunlap lives and works at his home in Altadena, and continues to focus on honing his craft and speaking to his audience directly through his arresting images.
